3:40 PM: Despite high volatility, the Sensex ended the session on a positive note at 15,097.40 (provisional) with a sharp gain of 88.72 points or 0.59% The barometer hit a high of 15,257.30 in afternoon trade. The Nifty closed at 4583.70, up 11.05 points or 0.24%. In intra-day trades, the Nifty touched a high of 4636.85 and a low of 4561.95. Besides expectations from the new UPA government, a firm trend on the global bourses kept the mood positive today. Capital goods, information technology, automobile and PSU stocks had a good session. Infrastructure and sugar stocks rallied sharply. Almost all Reliance group stocks ended on a weak note today. Realty stocks failed to hold gains and declined sharply during the final hour. FMCG and oil stocks traded weak. Metal stocks lost their way in late afternoon trade. Grasim, BHEL, Tata Motors, L&T, Infosys, M&M, Hindalco, Sun Pharma, ACC, Tata Power, TCS, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank posted sharp gains.
